High-Quality Chamber Music at St. Lawrence in Malá Strana

The Svatovavřinecká sezóna (St. Lawrence Season) is a cycle of chamber concerts held under the auspices of the Prague Spring International Music Festival. In February, the Church of St. Lawrence in Malá Strana will host three performances, with a total of seven concerts scheduled through mid-April. On February 8, the Doležal Quartet will perform, followed a week later by the trio of Michaela Koudelková (flutes), Monika Knoblochová (harpsichord), and Libor Mašek (Baroque cello). The leap day of February 29 will belong to clarinetist Marek Švejkar and pianist Lenka Korecká. All concerts begin at 7:30 PM.

The Doležal Quartet will perform with Václav Dvořák and Alexej Rosík (violins), Martin Adamovič (viola), and Vojtěch Urban (cello). Their repertoire for the evening of February 8 also includes Brahms’s Piano Quintet in F Minor, Op. 34, featuring guest pianist Michal Rezek. The first half of the evening will present Vítězslav Novák’s String Quartet No. 1 in G Major, Op. 22.

The program titled Johann Sebastian Bach and Sons on February 15 will showcase the compositional mastery of not only the head of the Bach family but also his descendants: Johann Christian, Johann Christoph Friedrich, Wilhelm Friedemann, and Carl Philipp Emanuel. The evening will conclude with Johann Sebastian’s Sonata in G Minor, BWV 1034.

On February 29, in collaboration with the Everlasting Hope Festival (Věčná naděje), Marek Švejkar and Lenka Korecká will perform a selection of less frequently heard works. The program features Niels Wilhelm Gade’s Fantasiestücke, Op. 43, Erwin Schulhoff’s Hot-Sonate, and Sergei Prokofiev’s Sonata, Op. 94, arranged for clarinet and piano.
