April 5, 2025, marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of composer Oldřich Flosman. It is his music that takes center stage in today’s episode of Akademie, alongside interviews with four performers who champion his work. Guests include violist Jitka Hosprová, clarinetist Marek Švejkar, and conductors Chuhei Iwasaki and Jiří Malát—the latter of whom also shares more personal reflections on the composer.
Who was Oldřich Flosman, and what defines his music? Is it timeless, deserving of a place on today’s stages, or is it too closely tied to the era in which it was created? How do the various guests view Flosman’s musical and political engagement during the former regime? Find the answers to these and other questions in today’s Akademie. Featured compositions include Romance and Windy Scherzo for flute and harp, the 3rd movement of the Flute Concerto, Love Variations for baritone and strings on excerpts from the Song of Songs, Brigand Sonatina (Zbojnická sonatina) for clarinet and piano, Three Fugues for strings, Michelangelo’s Stone for viola and orchestra, and the Prelude from Wind Quintet No. 2, accompanied by the composer’s own commentary from the radio archives.
